How Long Do Ghost Shrimp Live?

A healthy ghost shrimp in a stable tank lives about a year to a year and a half. That is short enough that a colony needs periodic replacement and long enough that most losses in the first month are not old age — they are husbandry.
What shortens lifespan
- Unstable temperature and frequent parameter swings
- Chronic low-level ammonia in an under-cycled tank
- Soft water and repeated difficult molts
- Overcrowding and constant competition for food
- Predation stress, even without an actual attack

- A mature, planted, lightly stocked tank
- Steady GH in the 8–12 range
- Small weekly water changes instead of large monthly ones

Why some shrimp die in the first week
Any batch of shrimp includes animals near the end of their natural life. Add transit stress and a new tank's chemistry and a small number of week-one losses is statistically normal for the species, not a sign of poor stock.
